Artist's Description

Ms. Lerlene's pose with her head held high reflects dignity and strength of character. We are a matriarchal society and many women are forced to take the lead in raising and nurturing their families. Even though many of them are of little means they never tire in giving their all for those they love. Similarly Ms. Lerlene is not ashamed to work with her hands, as there are still remnants of flour on them. She is renowned for making her flour cakes or 'Dokie' as she calls them.

About Nicole Minnis

Nicole Minnis

Bahamian artist Nicole, the eldest of three children, was born to Eddie and Sherry Minnis in 1970. She graduated from Queen's College Senior High School in 1986 with seven G.C.E.'s, including a distinction in Art. Her recognition as a young Bahamian painter started soon after she left school when she won numerous Central Bank and Esso competitions. She also received an award in the senior division of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition for meritorious works of Art. In May of 1988, she held her first individual Art Exhibition and participated in a joint Caribbean Art Exhibition held in Toronto, Canada.
